Questions Homeowners and Families Often Ask
Future-Ready FAQ
Where do I start, and what does the assessment cost?
Start with a Future-Ready Home Assessment. During our launch, the assessment is free for the first 20–30 assessments and takes approximately 45 minutes in your home. After that, the assessment will be $199. We review your entrances, bathroom, stairs, lighting and everyday movement through the space. You receive a written roadmap with practical recommendations, and you keep it whether or not you choose NYCO for the renovations.
Is it too early to start planning?
Probably not. Planning early is about making thoughtful decisions before anything happens, while you still have the time and flexibility to choose what works best for you. Future-ready improvements are typically easier, more affordable and less disruptive when planned in advance, especially when they can be incorporated into renovations you are already considering.
Where should we begin?
Bathrooms, entrances, stairs and lighting are the most common starting points, but every home and household is different. The assessment considers your daily routines, mobility, priorities and the current condition of the home. From there, we identify which improvements would make the greatest difference and organize them into a clear, practical order.
Do we have to renovate everything at once?
No. Most homeowners begin with one room or a few priority improvements. We can develop a phased plan that separates immediate needs from upgrades that can be completed later. This allows you to manage the investment over time while ensuring that each project supports the long-term plan for your home.
How much will the renovations cost?
The cost depends on the room, the condition of the home and the scope of work. After the assessment, we provide itemized options with clear pricing. Some improvements, such as better lighting or properly installed grab bars, can be relatively affordable. Larger projects may include a curbless shower, wider doorway or no-step entrance.
Will my home end up looking clinical?
No. Future-ready design should feel like a well-designed renovation, not a medical retrofit. Features such as curbless showers, layered lighting, accessible storage and easy-to-use hardware can be incorporated discreetly and beautifully. Because NYCO designs and builds cabinetry in-house, we can create customized solutions that match the character and finishes of your home.
Can we stay in the home during construction?
Usually, yes. Before construction begins, we review scheduling, dust control, access and how essential areas of the home will remain usable. For larger projects, there may be brief periods when a bathroom, entrance or other space is unavailable. We explain these disruptions in advance so you can make the appropriate arrangements.
What areas cause the most difficulty in a home?
Bathrooms are often the highest-priority area because of wet surfaces, high tub walls and limited space. Entrances and stairs can also become difficult because of steps, uneven thresholds or poor lighting. Throughout the home, narrow pathways, loose rugs, dark hallways and hard-to-reach storage can make everyday activities more challenging than necessary.
Why are bathrooms such an important focus?
Bathrooms combine water, hard surfaces and frequent changes in position, making them one of the most challenging rooms in many homes. Improvements may include properly anchored grab bars, non-slip flooring, a curbless or walk-in shower, a comfort-height toilet, brighter lighting and a hand-held showerhead. Many of these upgrades improve both comfort and usability.
How do I know I can trust the renovation company?
Look for relevant certifications, a written contract, transparent pricing, local experience and payments connected to completed project milestones. NYCO is a member of the Canadian Home Builders’ Association and holds AdaptivHome certification. We also manage required permits and inspections.
Be cautious of cash-only demands, large upfront payments, high-pressure sales tactics or unusually low estimates.
Is financial assistance available in New Brunswick?
Several provincial and federal tax credits or assistance programs may apply, depending on the homeowner, the property and the type of renovation. These can include credits for accessibility improvements or creating a secondary suite for an aging relative. Program requirements change, so we can identify potential options and direct you to the appropriate government source for confirmation.
Can these renovations really help me remain at home longer?
For many homeowners, yes. The purpose of future-ready renovations is to make the home easier to use as needs change, allowing you to remain in familiar surroundings with greater independence. Planning ahead can also delay more disruptive decisions and reduce the need for expensive emergency modifications. Individual financial or long-term-care questions should be confirmed with the appropriate provincial authority.
Can you work with a physiotherapist or occupational therapist?
Yes. Recommendations from a physiotherapist, occupational therapist or other qualified professional can be incorporated into the renovation scope. Their understanding of the homeowner’s functional needs can help guide dimensions, layouts, fixtures and other details. We translate those recommendations into practical construction solutions that work within the home and support the overall design.
