If you’re renovating a home to improve safety or accessibility, there may be provincial and federal programs that help offset some of the cost. Here are the main programs New Brunswick homeowners should know about in 2026.

New Brunswick Seniors’ Home Renovation Tax Credit

New Brunswick offers a refundable Seniors’ Home Renovation Tax Credit. Eligible seniors aged 65+ or family members living with a senior can claim up to $10,000 in qualifying renovation expenses per tax year, providing a maximum credit of $1,000.

There is no income limit. The renovation must primarily improve access, mobility or safety rather than simply increase the home’s value.

Federal Home Accessibility Tax Credit

The federal Home Accessibility Tax Credit applies to eligible renovations that improve accessibility, functionality or safety for a qualifying individual who is 65+ or eligible for the Disability Tax Credit. Up to $20,000 of eligible expenses per year may qualify.

Tax rules changed for 2026 regarding the interaction between this credit and the Medical Expense Tax Credit, so homeowners planning to claim both should confirm the current CRA requirements.

New Brunswick Homeowner Repair Program

New Brunswick’s Homeowner Repair Program also provides assistance to qualifying low-income homeowners. The program includes assistance for adaptations for seniors who experience difficulty with daily activities in their homes. The current maximum forgivable loan for senior home adaptations is $7,000, subject to eligibility requirements.

Multigenerational Home Renovation Tax Credit

This federal credit is more specific. It applies when an eligible renovation creates a self-contained secondary unit so a senior aged 65+ or an adult eligible for the Disability Tax Credit can live with a qualifying relative. For qualifying renovations, up to $50,000 in expenses can be claimed.

Programs and tax rules can change. Always confirm eligibility with the Government of New Brunswick, CRA or a qualified tax professional before beginning work based on an expected credit.
