How To Make Your Kitchen Renovation Easier
Deciding to renovate your kitchen is both exhilarating and nerve-wracking. To help alleviate some of the tension, we asked kitchen professionals for suggestions to make the process simpler, less costly and more effective.
Consider the following 8 excellent tips for transforming your kitchen redesign into a project that culminates in the kitchen of your dreams:
Consider an Island Before Making a Purchase
If you want more counter and storage space, installing a kitchen island can be worthwhile. Still, an island may restrict the number of people working in the kitchen, encumber traffic flow and create crowded conditions. So try out an island before committing – make a full-scale cardboard or plywood replica and live with it for a few days; make sure you can easily open the doors of your stove and refrigerator consistently.
Create a Temporary Kitchen
While your primary kitchen is out of commission, a temporary kitchen lets you cook, wash dishes and brew your morning coffee. You don’t need a complicated setup here; usefulness is the primary objective. To construct a makeshift kitchen, save a couple of your old cabinets and worktops. Install the cabinets, and if required, trim the countertop to fit. Add countertop appliances and other necessary things for meal preparation such as a toaster oven, hot plate, coffeemaker, microwave, and refrigerator (even a half-sized model would be great).
Include an Office
Include this in your renovation if you want to utilize a portion of your kitchen as an office. You do not need a large amount of room; often, a modest sitting space with a computer station suffices. Add outlets for plugging in your computer equipment throughout the renovation. Additionally, provide storage space such as shelves or a recessed wall cabinet, so as to prevent documents from being misplaced or creating a mess.
Leave Room for Future Kitchen Renovations and Appliances
If you’re replacing cabinets, allow enough room between cabinets to accommodate a bigger model. Fill the additional area with filler strips or panels – order filler strips and panels in the same colour as your cabinets. You can put shelves between the panels above the refrigerator or the top cabinets.
Keep an Eye Out for Floor Gaps
If you preserve the current floor but replace the cabinets, you may encounter gaps between the old floor and the new cabinets. To avoid this, ascertain that the entire width of the new cabinets corresponds to the complete width of the cabinets being replaced. The depth of base cabinets is typically 24 inches; however, toe-kick depths vary. Cabinet widths range from 6 to 48 inches in 3-inch increments. If your new cabinets don’t fit inside the old cabinet footprint, gaps will result. Molding may be used to conceal gaps less than 3/4 of an inch.
Order Countertops After Cabinets Are Installed
To calculate the countertop measurements, measure your installed base cabinets (do not use the ones in your plans). After installation, the row of cabinets may have a varied size owing to out-of-square walls. A carpenter’s square should be placed in the corner (above the end cabinet). Due to layers of joint compound, the corner may be thinner than the remainder of the wall. To minimize any unsightly gap between the countertop and the wall once the countertops are installed, measure to the furthest point on the wall above the cabinets.
Install Under Cabinet Storage
You may purchase pre-made racks (or a set of hinges) to construct your wooden rack to store knives, spices, and other small objects which take up counter space in the kitchen. The rack swings up against the cabinet’s bottom when the cooking is complete. Without the clutter of spice racks or knife holders, pull-down racks and under-cabinet drawers provide rapid access to kitchen staples.
Utilize Unused Storage Space
Backsplash racks provide convenient access and attractive storage. A stainless steel wall organizer costs around $3 per foot; additional shelves and bins are available.
